100 YEARS FUNCTION

On Saturday October 18 2008 over 300 past and present 1st City members gathered to celebrate the Group's 100th birthday. The function was held at the Den in Palmerston Street and we were joined by Scouting dignitaries Bob Taylor (Chief Commissioner of Victoria), Jon Willis (Region Commissioner Yarra Valley) and Marg Currie (District Commissioner Boroondara), as well as the Mayor of the City of Boroondara Cr Coral Ross.
The event had taken 12 months of planning by a dedicated committee who meticulously worked through every facet of the day. There were displays of historical items in the Cub, Scout, Venturer and Rover Dens as well as in the hall and a 100 years badge was made to commemorate the occasion. .The Saga of Melba.s Own., the history of our group in book form was updated to reflect the last 25 years and now covers the full 100 years of the Group. The Committee was busy organising the catering for food and beverages, security, car parking, decorations and of course the cake.
However, the biggest job was tracking down the past members of the group. Facebook played a big part as did a mailout to a database full of past members. Of course word of mouth is always the best way to find people and it is amazing that when you talk to one person, they then still see someone else, who then still see someone else and so on. Next thing we knew we had 300 people. Gentlemen from as far back as the 1940.s came. Just walking in to the hall was joy for many of them. Being there brought back some wonderful memories and some wonderful stories were shared between the old and the young.
During the official part of the evening, there were speeches from our dignitaries, as well as special past members Roger Pither, David Stewart and Ron Allison. Bob Taylor (Chief Commissioner of Victoria) presented us with a framed certificate commemorating our 100 years of Scouting. It was a fantastic event and it was enjoyed and appreciated by all who attended.
