The Den

celebrating 100 years

The Scout Section is for boys and girls aged 10 ½ years to 15 years. They meet on a Wednesday night from 7.15pm to 9pm. There are 30 Scouts in our Troop and they are divided into small groups called Patrols. Each patrol has a Patrol Leader and an Assistant Patrol Leader. Scouts enjoy activities like construction, hiking, competition camping, cooking, canoeing, leadership courses, theatre sports, bike riding and go-karting

Our Scout section started in 1908 by a group of boys who were inspired by a book — Scouting for Boys. They met by themselves under a streetlamp outside Raisbeck Newsagency, in the evenings and in the open paddocks at the weekend. This went on for months until Mr. Morbey, who managed Raisbeck Newsagency could not stand the thought of those kids out in the cold under a street lamp, so he invited them into his dining room for their evening meetings. He got a friend of his, Mr. Townsend, from the Y.M.C.A. to help them.
